For BioShieldUV Classic and Magnetic Series Owners
TruBlu germicidal bulbs are high-performance consumables, not LED lights. Here is what the science says, what real HVAC conditions do to them, and what you should expect.
This is the most important thing to understand about UV-C lamps. A TruBlu bulb can still glow visibly while producing significantly reduced germicidal output. The blue glow is a byproduct of the mercury discharge, not an indicator of disinfecting power. You cannot see UV-C radiation with the naked eye.
A bulb that looks fine may have already lost 20% or more of its effectiveness. This is why time-based replacement matters, even when your TruBlu appears to be working normally. If musty odors or visible coil deposits return despite the lamp being on, this is likely the cause.
Most people expect any light bulb to last years. UV-C germicidal lamps work differently. TruBlu bulbs use a heated wire filament inside a quartz glass envelope to excite mercury vapor — closer in technology to traditional incandescent bulbs than to LEDs.
| Type | Rated Hours | Lifespan at 24/7 | How It Works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Incandescent | 750 to 2,000 hrs | 1 to 3 months | Wire filament heats to produce visible light |
| TruBlu UV-C Lamp | 8,000 to 9,000 hrs | 6 to 12 months in HVAC | Filament excites mercury vapor to produce UV-C at 253.7nm |
| LED Light | 25,000 to 50,000 hrs | 10 to 20 years | Solid-state semiconductor — no filament, no gas |
UV-C LEDs do exist, but at the power levels and costs that make sense for residential HVAC, fluorescent-style lamps remain the proven industry standard. UV-C LED technology is still maturing for high-output coil-cleaning applications. We use what HVAC professionals actually rely on.
The HVAC environment makes it harder. Lab-rated hours assume stable temperature, no vibration, and low humidity. Your ductwork is the opposite of that.
Replacing your TruBlu on schedule is not a sign of a defect. It is normal maintenance for a high-performance consumable, no different from replacing an air filter.
TruBlu bulbs are rated for 8,000 to 9,000 hours of continuous operation - roughly 10 to 12 months running 24/7. Every major UV-C manufacturer, along with ASHRAE and the CDC, recommends annual replacement at minimum. Any brand claiming 2 or more years in an HVAC duct is overstating what the technology can do.
8,000 to 9,000 Industry-rated bulb hours 6 to 12 months Realistic HVAC lifespan 15 to 20% UV-C output loss by 8,000 hoursOutput does not drop suddenly - it degrades in stages.
Months 1 to 4 Bulb operates at 90 to 100% germicidal output. Peak performance. Months 5 to 6 Output drops to 80 to 90%. Still effective, but degradation has begun. BioShieldUV's 6-month bulb warranty covers this period. Months 7 to 10 Output may drop below 80%. The bulb still glows, but germicidal performance is compromised. Replace by month 10. Month 10 and beyond UV-C output is significantly reduced or the bulb may fail entirely. Coil protection is no longer reliable. There is no guaranteed minimum lifespan for any individual TruBlu bulb. Bulbs are manufactured to the highest standards, but individual units vary, as they do with every UV-C manufacturer industry-wide. This is not a defect. It is an inherent characteristic of the technology, and it is precisely why we built the warranty protection we did.
Some factors are within your control. Others come with the territory.
Touching the lamp with bare hands deposits oils onto the glass. These create hot spots when the lamp heats up, causing micro-fractures and accelerated deterioration. Always handle with gloves or a clean cloth.
If your unit is wired to the blower cycle and the blower runs in short bursts, hundreds of additional ignition events per year shorten lamp life. Run continuously (24/7) when possible.
Lightning strikes, large appliance startups, and utility fluctuations can instantly degrade or destroy the lamp. A whole-home surge protector is a worthwhile investment.
Dust acts as a UV absorber, reducing effective output before the lamp's rated hours are consumed. Check for dust every time you change your air filter.
Mounting the lamp where it is exposed to direct drip condensation, vibrating ductwork without clearance, or severely restricted airflow accelerates wear.
An improperly seated lamp can arc at the pin connectors, creating both a fire hazard and accelerated electrode wear. Always seat the lamp fully in the G23 socket before powering on.
The oils from skin create chemical bonds with the quartz glass envelope that cannot be removed. When the lamp heats up, these points become thermal stress concentrators. Always use gloves.
Proper installation is the single biggest factor in maximizing bulb lifespan. These steps apply to both initial install and every replacement.
01 - Power down everything first Turn off the BioShieldUV unit at the outlet and shut off your HVAC system at the thermostat. UV-C exposure causes severe eye and skin burns within seconds. Wait for any residual glow to fully dissipate before opening any access panel. 02 - Gloves on before touching the lamp Use clean disposable gloves or the included protective cloth before opening the lamp packaging. Skin oil contamination is invisible but permanent. 03 - Inspect before installing Check for chips, cracks, or damage to the glass envelope. Confirm the G23 pins are straight and undamaged. Do not install a visibly damaged lamp. If a bulb fails within 14 days of delivery, contact us for a Dead-on-Arrival replacement. 04 - Position for coil proximity For Classic Series: mount with the lamp aimed directly at the evaporator coil. Allow at least 14 inches of straight duct clearance. Avoid mounting where the lamp might drip condensation onto the condensate pan plastic components. 05 - Seat the bulb fully in the G23 socket Insert both pins fully with even pressure. A loose connection causes arcing, electrical noise, ballast stress, and dramatically accelerated electrode erosion. 06 - Verify operation Restore power and confirm the indicator light (Classic) is on, or check the viewport (Magnetic SL36 and SL18-HVAC models). The SL18 Wall Plug model has a built-in indicator on the adapter. If a brand new bulb fails to light, check pin seating first - loose connection is the most common cause. 07 - Dispose of old bulbs safely UV-C lamps contain a small amount of mercury and must be disposed of as hazardous waste. Home Depot and Lowe's accept fluorescent bulb recycling free of charge. Check Earth911.com for local drop-off locations. All bulb warranty claims are replacement only. UV bulbs are never refundable under any circumstances.

This guide is for educational purposes and does not constitute a health or medical claim. UV-C lamps are intended for HVAC coil maintenance applications. Always follow installation instructions and applicable electrical codes. Professional installation is recommended for hardwired models. UV-C radiation is hazardous - never operate with access panels open or look directly at an operating lamp.
